Human habitation in the area dates back approximately 8,000 years, with small family groups of Native Americans, including the Basketmaker Ancestral Puebloans (formerly known as Anasazi by early non-indigenous archaeologists) around 300 CE. Over time, the Virgin Anasazi culture (around 500 CE) and the Parowan Fremont group emerged as the Basketmakers settled in permanent communities. Later, the Parrusits and various other Southern Paiute subtribes inhabited the region after the departure of the previous groups. In the 19th century, Mormon settlers arrived in the area, establishing their presence in the early 1860s.

The primary objectives of Zion National Park are to preserve its unique geological features, particularly Zion Canyon and its stunning Navajo sandstone canyons, which resulted from extraordinary erosion processes along the Colorado Plateau’s margin. Additionally, the park aims to protect its wilderness character, wild and scenic rivers, and evidence of human history, and to facilitate scientific research while providing opportunities for public enjoyment and enlightenment.

The first visitor lodging in Zion Canyon, known as Wylie Camp, was established in 1917 as a tent camp. Subsequently, the Utah Parks Company, a subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad, acquired Wylie Camp in 1923 and offered ten-day rail/bus tours to Zion and other nearby destinations. In 1925, the Zion Lodge complex was constructed on the site of the former Wylie tent camp, designed in a rustic architectural style by architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood and funded by the Utah Parks Company.
