Utah is home to skiing’s most famous slogan. Ski Utah, the state’s ski-industry association, calls it The Greatest Snow on Earth®, and the numbers back the claim: 15 resorts, 500+ inches of snowfall annually in the mountains, and 200 days of sunshine a year.
Why Utah is different
According to Ski Utah, ten resorts sit less than an hour from Salt Lake City International Airport. You can land at SLC in the morning and be on a lift in the afternoon — a combination no other major ski destination in the United States matches.
The ski areas
- Salt Lake City canyons: Alta, Brighton, Snowbird, and Solitude in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons, the closest skiing to the airport.
- Park City: Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort, a skiers-only resort, minutes from Park City’s historic Main Street.
- Ogden area: Snowbasin and Powder Mountain to the north of Salt Lake City.
- Elsewhere in Utah: Sundance in Provo Canyon, Nordic Valley near Eden, and Brian Head in southern Utah.
Planning winter travel
- Canyon roads can close or require traction devices during storms; check current road conditions before driving.
- Traveling with ski equipment and luggage is easier with a pre-booked private transfer than with a rental car, especially in winter weather.
- Book flights, lodging, and transportation together during peak season — December through March fills up quickly.
